The funny thing about sibling rivalry is how it trickles down to the most ordinary day-to-day activities. If everything is a competition with your sibling, then virtually every time you have to coordinate with them involves tension, back-and-forth, incessant one-upping, and nonstop bickering. Sometimes, it feels like absolutely nothing can get done because your sibling has decided to make a minute detail emblematic of all the problems with your dynamic.

For me, as a kid, this dynamic always manifested itself in the most surprising ways. When it came to which movie we wanted to see, there was always disagreement. When it came to what type of music we wanted to listen to in the car, we'd argue so much that our parents would enforce that no music would be played for the rest of the trip. We'd even bicker over which fast food place we wanted to go to when our parents decided to give us an unhealthy treat. She would answer the phone when I called for pick up from middle school and then would "accidentally forget" to relay the message to my folks every time. I'd get stuck at school waiting till dark sometimes even after multiple calls home.... "Ooops I forgot to mention it..." was the excuse followed by a giggle each time. Her version of a power trip.

    No amount of complaining to my folks made a difference. They would listen to her excuses and then declare it an "accident" and tell me to let it go. After being stranded multiple times this way I decided to "accidentally" do the same thing to her. She called for a ride home and I just never passed the message. When she eventually made it home, she was seething with anger about not me passing the message. "Ooops!" And a smile was what she got back. Sometimes you do have to fight fire with fire.
